As an artist I specialise in detailed drawings on both paper and wood. I use a variety of materials in my work, including graphite pencils, charcoal, pastels and chalk. My background in archaeology and the heritage sector has influenced what inspires my work, as has growing up in and around St Andrews. I love historical and eye-catching buildings, townscapes and landscapes, and these form the majority of the drawings I create. Living so near the Home of Golf, I have also been inspired by the Old Course and its famous views.
My use of wood in my artwork arose out of my working for a time helping to maintain an ancient woodland in Fife. While most of the felled trees were cut into quality hardwood planks for furniture making, I was fascinated by the form and colours of the off-cuts of wood and was interested to see if I could draw on it. Once dry and lightly sanded, I found most wood types to be a great canvas for my drawings and I take time to create a drawing that incorporates the natural shapes, growth rings and colours in the wood.
I produce a range of mounted and framed prints, cards and wood-drawings, and undertake small and large commissions. My work has been exhibited and sold in a number of galleries and shops in Scotland and I take part in Open Studios North Fife as well as numerous Made in Fife events.
